These recommendations do not cover all possibilities. They are some things to check before you have your transmission rebuilt. Always check transmission fluid level first. Always run a scanner on any computer controlled transmission. On modulated transmissions make sure they have enough vacuum.

This transmission is a rear wheel drive 4 speed automatic. Common symptoms are erratic shifting, hesitating going into gear and losing transmission fluid without a trace of a leak.

You have a modulator on the passenger's side of the vehicle pointing towards the driver's door.  Pull the rubber line off the modulator and see it trans fluid comes out of the line.  Now, if it does your modulator is
no good.  It can cause any of the above symptoms. then make sure you or a shop run a scanner on the vehicle.

You also have band adjustments on this trans. Make sure they adjust them when your transmission is serviced.

The transmissions above are 4 speed front wheel drives. They are all computer controlled.  If your transmission starts shifting erratic or not at all,
then make sure you or a shop run a scanner on the vehicle.

You want to see if you have a  sensor that has gone bad, causing your problems. The vehicle speed and range sensors like to go bad on vehicles with these transmissions in them. So keep that in mind.

The transmissions above are rear wheel drive 4 speed automatics, that are all computer controlled. Common symptoms are, overdrive light flashing, transmission shifting erratic, slipping or not shifting at all.

External sensors on the vehicle like the  throttle position sensor or vehicle speed sensor quite often go bad, causing these symptoms.

Always run a scanner first to see if a sensor is causing your problem.

The transmission above is a rear wheel drive 4 speed automatic and shift timing is controlled by the computer and a throttle pressure cable that connects from the transmission to the carburetor or throttle body.  Always check these items first before your purchase a transmission. Common symptoms are transmission shifting erratic, slipping or not shifting at all. Also the check engine light can come on.
On most Toyotas, they have a diagnostic box you can retrieve codes with. The location of this box should be in your owners manual.

Make sure your clutch fan on the front of the motor is not starting to seize up.  This causes the engine to sound unusually loud almost like the transmission is not shifting into 4th gear.

The transmission above is a rear wheel drive, 4 speed automatic. Shift timing is computer and throttle pressure cable controlled. the throttle pressure connects from the transmission to the carburetor or throttle body, depending on the configuration of your engine. Also check this cable and run a scanner first to see if a sensor is causing your problem. Make sure the cable is not out of adjustment.

External sensors on the vehicle like the  throttle position sensor or vehicle speed sensor quite often go bad, causing these symptoms.

Shift solenoids A and C come up a lot be careful. I have found that internal transmission problems can also cause these codes. I pull the trans pan off, check the solenoids and look for metal to determine the fix.
You want to see if you have a  sensor that has gone bad also, causing your problems. The transmission solenoids and vehicle speed, range sensors like to go bad on vehicles with these transmissions in them. So keep that in mind.

The transmission above is a front wheel drive 5 speed automatic transmission. They are computer controlled.  Common symptoms are transmission shifting erratic, harsh or erratic reverse. Also the check engine light can come on.

External sensors like the throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensor, inhibitor switch can go bad, causing these symptoms. Always run a self diagnostic check first to see if a sensor is causing your problem.
This transmission has severe valve body wear, along with common solenoid problems, the shift solenoids that attach to the valve body, sometimes they can go bad between 65.000 and 100.000 miles. I have found that many times the only fix for some of the valve body problems is to purchase one from the dealership. sorry cause they are expensive.
The direct drum piston cracks a lot,  you should always buy a new one.
